PRACTICE
STUDIO MÆRZ operates at the thresholds of art, architecture, and cultural practice—where material memory and digital speculation converge. Its work weaves together craft and code, gesture and geometry, creating spatial narratives that speak to both ancestral knowledge and algorithmic possibility.
In collaboration with artisans, institutions, and contemporary brands, the studio cultivates new forms of solidarity—constructing environments that are both fragile and resilient, ephemeral and enduring.
Each project is a lived proposition: an immersive field of relations where tradition is not only restored or preserved but transformed through engagement with emerging tools and shifting contexts.
From Basel to Tokyo and Seoul, STUDIO MÆRZ’s work has been recognized on an international stage, offering multidimensional experiences that resist categorization—situated between landscape and interface, ritual and prototype, past and becoming.
ARTISTIC DIRECTION
STUDIO MÆRZ is directed by Selma Alihodžić, a Basel-based architect and designer, known for her multidisciplinary approach that combines art, architecture and social engagement. She leads the studio’s collaborations with artisans, brands and cultural institutions to translate collective knowledge from the past and present in the here and now.
Alihodžić graduated as an architect with honors at the University of Stuttgart and at the University of Tokyo. Her first ten years of professional experience include collaborations with international architectural firms in Tokyo, Stuttgart, and Basel. She has taught Architecture and Design Theory in the Master of Arts Programme at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. She is active as a guest critic at the FHNW, among others.
RECOGNITION
Her work has been featured in prominent international exhibitions, including the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, the 4th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and the 5th Biennale Svizzera del Territorio in Lugano. She has been selected as for the artist in residence programs at Fundaziun Nairs and the TaDA - Textile and Design Alliance, among others, where she developed site-specific new projects.
MEDIATION
Alihodžić co-hosts the This Is Basel podcast, a Lovie Award-winning series that delves into Basel’s cultural landscape in collaboration with institutions like the Kunstmuseum Basel, Fondation Beyeler, Museum Tinguely, Museum der Kulturen Basel and the Vitra Design Museum. Her writings have been published in architecture and design media, including Bauwelt, Disegno Journal and more. Dedicated to the mediation of architecture, she has developed the first architecture programme for Kunsttage Basel.
